Key Word Research
Key word research is an integral component to an effective search engine optimization program. A keyword in a web search is one of the words used to find matching web pages. For example, if you are interested in buying a home, you may "Google" terms such as FSBO, For Sale By Owner, Home For Sale, Real Estate, or maybe evn the name of a local realtor. Since it was not possible to ask natural language questions and find the desired sites, keywords were popularized during the early days of search engine development. This forces us to think outside the box when in search of information. The best searches utilize keywords that are not too broad or too concise. Effective "keywords" capture the essence of the topic with out being too general.

Search engines still use keywords, only today, complex algorithms determine what the each engine takes to heart . Modern search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN have sophisticated methods for determining which words in a search string are important and ought to be recognized and which should be ignored. Place keeper words, articles and conjunctions are not recognized as keywords because they are rarely relevant to a search. Almost every site on the Internet has words such as "the," "and," this," and "that," so it makes little sense to search for these terms. Google removed words such as "the" and "a" from its indexes for several years, but then brought them back, allowing for certain types of precise searches.
While selecting great keywords is important, it is even more critical to employ them properly. Keyword density is the percentage of words on a web page that match a specified set of keywords. More is not always better! In fact, putting a word in your site too many times can actually hurt your standing. Inserting an abundant ratio of a particular keyword is called keyword stuffing; this is not a legitimate search engine optimization technique, and can actually get your site black-listed by the major search engines.
